(National Geographic) ISBN 978-1426200564 1426200560

This planning guide and handbook with 275 scenic drives helps you explore U.S. highways and county roads in 50 American states. Readers will learn what to see, where to go, when to visit and how to get there.

Drive descriptions include contact information with phone numbers, addresses and web sites for local tourism offices. Scenic byways are grouped by region and listed by name. Drives include National Park Roads, National Forest Scenic Byways, State Byways and All-American Roads.

Before each route description, a summary lists distance, driving time, best season to go and special notes such as winter closures.

Route maps

Glossy, full-color images and detailed route maps highlight each driving tour.

Colored edge tabs for the 463 pages identify regions.

Arizona driving tour

Arizona's Apache Trail is a hair-raising route of plunging canyons and desert lakes. At one point, the road drops 1,500 feet during the 46-mile, three-hour drive from Apache Junction to Tonto National Monument.

Louisiana's Old Spanish Trail, once part of a 19th-century Spanish frontier trail, connects Houma, in the center of Cajun country, to Breaux Bridge, near Lafayette. It offers alligator farms, swamp tours, oil industry fabrication yards and cane fields on a three-hour, 108 mile-drive.

California Route 1

California's Route 1, between Monterey to Morro Bay, covers 123 miles in 6 hours driving time. Mountains plunge into the sea at Big Sur.

At Carmel Highlands, upscale houses overlook the sea from granite cliffs. After viewing state parks, waterfalls, beaches and birds, take a bus in San Simeon to see Hearst Castle.
